HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE DAVIS CHAPTER QUIZZES

Davis' chapter format is in a question-answer format.  He asks a question because he wants to provide what he considers to be the "greater truth:" i.e., after oftentimes discussing some other possible answers, he comes down for one that is preferable.

THE QUIZ WILL BE ON DAVIS' QUESTIONS WORD FOR WORD, AND ONLY QUESTIONS--NOT THE LISTS OF DATES OR NAMES.

EXAMPLES

Here are some examples from some of the questions he poses in his chapters.  You will see the exact question as in the book.

[from Davis' Chapter 1 the question reads]:  Did the Indians really sell Manhattan for $24?
A.  For two boxes of trade goods worth 60 Dutch guilders worth 2,400 British cents hence the famous $24.
B.  There was no transaction.
C.  Both A and B
D.  Neither A or B

According to Davis, the correct answer is A, taken word for word from Davis as to how we received the $24 figure.  Whereas Indians might not have believed they were actually selling anything, nevertheless they did take the items so there was a transaction even if both parties were not completely aware of what was going on.

[from Chapter 3]:  Q: Who were the Whigs?
A.  An American political party founded in the 1830s to oppose President Jackson.
B.  The successor party to the Federalist party.
C.  Both A and B
D.  Neither A or B

According to Davis, the correct answer is C--both are correct.
