The Methods and Skills of History: A Practical Guide "HISTORY BOOT CAMP"
/\ this is how we will be directly assessing the material in this assigned textbook in class.  Note that you may consider using some points, however, to develop your bluebook exam responses as well.

NO MAKE-UP POSSIBLE (this is also being used to assess active attendance); instead
one (and only one) automatic drop of the lowest for each student.

WHY HISTORY BOOTCAMP.  Despite having taken many classes, not all students come away with the ability to think in terms of that discipline.  Students study science, for example, but do not necessarily think in a scientific; one can work through equations or memorize the periodic table, but not think scientifically.  For example, below is a 7th grade textbook about learning how to think scientifically.  Likewise some students taking a history course may come away with a too narrow understanding of what history is about.  That is what this book by Furay & Salevouris is about:  showing us what it means to think historically and to do the work of historians.

HOW.   One (and only one) automatic drop of the lowest for each student.  The in-class quiz (administered at the beginning, middle or end of the assigned day--so plan to be there the whole time to be safe) will consist of 6 to 7 questions (with one freebie so you don't have to be perfect to be perfect).  The questions for each quiz will cover material for assigned day from the assigned chapter & accompanying exercise as listed below.

Furay / Salevouris chapter.  Read to identify the key purpose of the chapter; what are the authors trying to persuade the reader about?  What are the kinds of information presented; what examples are used to make their point?  Note that the authors try to highlight key points in bold letters. Chapter exercise to prepare for quiz.  Work through the assigned exercise below--following the directions provided for each in the textbook--to find the best answer. Note only a portion of the selection will be shown.
