Kaixo-Greetings:

Hey all,

It is that time again to get the skirts on.  We will go the Monday and Wednesday of San Inazio week.  Our schedule is as follows…

6:30pm, Monday July 27th – Practice @ Basque Center

6:30pm, Wednesday July 29th – Rehearsal @ St. John’s Cathedral

We are going to try to have a couple more practices to kick off the dust.  Please join if you can, but if not, the practices above are most critical.

Extra Practices

6:30pm, Wednesday July 15th – Practice @ Basque Center

6:30pm, Wednesday July 22nd – Practice @ Basque Center

The thought is to not have a planned dinner after rehearsal like we have done in the past.  With the Oinkari Alumni dinner/event the next day (Thur. July 30th) and other engagements, we thought there was enough going on.  I do imagine some of us might want to get a drink or three after, but we can just play it by ear.

See you all soon,

John Krakau

1. In front of the church before mass
Approximately 15 minutes

1A. Martxa.  After playing up to the corner (not necessarily dancing unless needed for a run-through), the group forms up to march to the front door.  The martxa cycle (3-vuelta-1-salto-1-salto/vuelta) is used here, but with staggered entry of one pair at a time: so the captain and the first pair dance out first, then numbers 2s, etc.  The group then swings around to face the front door to end with the kick of the "salto/vuelta."  Dancing ends but playing castanets continues as we transition into ...

1B. Kuadros runs through twice so each foursome gets a turn on the outside and inside.  At the end of the second, another martxa begins and from here the group transitions into..

1C. Statue escort.  From facing the door, the group returns to the corner to escort the statue in by again staggering its entry, this time turning around to lead the statue forward.  When the martxa ends, stop playing to allow for the statue to move into position. [at this time it is possible to substitute dancers].

1D. Zortziko-Makil.  Zortzikoa substitutes the genuflexion portion with switching lines, ends with a transition into makil dantza.  Dancers pick up the sticks and march around to form again and perform makil where the group moves counterclockwise every beat to make two complete rotations.  Set the sticks aside & go into

1E. Kontrapas.  Part 1 is playing the castanets in place; 2 is the rotation into two lines; 3 is the removal of the txapela with 4 being one march cycle.  End and go straight up (so people know to go inside).

1F. Create archway with hoops for the entry in the church

2.  During Mass: BANAKOA

At the singing of the “Holy, Holy” we move into our positions where we stand until our signal to ascend the altar which is when chalice is placed atop the altar after the consecration, and the priest kneels.
