Leixibatxoa
No person or occupation is exempt from the prick of Basque wit. In this exchange, it seems that we have a wayward Catholic priest who is having trouble with his vow of celibacy. Encountering one another on the opposing banks of a river, the priest and woman exchange comments. The priest tries to flatter the woman but at every turn she rejects his forays. The weakness of this priest is not just with celibacy. After she rejects his request for a kiss, the priest quickly sets aside Christian charity and angrily tells her he hopes that she burns. Insinuating who is the one that should be burned, the woman calmly replies, sure as long as are the burning piece of wood.

Lili Bat Ikusi
Dut
I saw a flower in a garden that I desired to have for my own. It keeps its beauty in summer and winter. There is not another one like it in the whole world. One night I decided to go there and take it in my hands because I didn’t think it was guarded. That night they almost killed me there. I’d like to give some advice especially to the youth: If you walk outside at night it is not wise. I myself will not go out at night anymore, thank God!

Lili bat ikhusi dut baratze batian,
Desiratzen bainuke ene sahetsian;
Lorea ez du galtzen, udan ez negian}
Haren parerik ez da beste bat mundian!}
Deliberatu nain, gai batez juraitia
Lili arraro haren eskila hartzia;
Ez benian phentsatzen begiratzen} zirela}
Gai hartan uste nian han galtzen} nintzala!}
Etsenplu bat nahi dut eman mundiari,
Eta partikulazki jente gaztiari
Gaiaz ebilten dena ez da zuhur ari;}
Ni begiraturen niz, eskerrak Jaunari.}

Lili Eder Bat
For a long time I have had my eyes on a beautiful flower but because of the unknown danger I don’t venture to try to take it into my hands.
Boy: “Look my love, tell me if you love me. Your eyes have wounded my heart badly. I may get gangrene from the open wound to my heart.”
Girl: “I wouldn’t want you to be hurt because of me. I don’t think that my eyes have done you any harm, so you are not in any danger. You won’t die from that.”
Boy: “You speak so nice and tenderly, if you let me I would like to visit you soon.”
[Lili eder bat badut nik aspaldi begiztaturik.]
Bena ez nintek ausarta haren eskiaren hartzera,
banaki zer den lanjera, juan nindaiteki aldera.
[Lili ederra, so'idazu, maite naizunez errazu.]
Zure begiak bihotza barnatik dereit kolpatu,
Kolpe huntarik badizu; gangranatzeko errixku.
[Ez nuke hahi malurrik balinbazinu ni ganik,]
ez dut uste ene begiek; eman deizien kolperik,
Ez duzu beraz lanjerik, etzira hilen hortarik.
[Mintzo zirade polliki, polliki eta tendreki.]
Bijitano bat nahi nuke nik; zure ganat llaburzki!
Desira badut segurki, bazinezadet permeti.

Loriak Udan
A "
Loriak udan intza bezela
maite det dama gazte bat.
Ari hainbeste nahi diotenik
ez da munduan beste bat
[Inoiz edo behin pasatzen ba’det
ikusi gabe aste bat.
Bihotz guztira banatutzen zait
alako gauza triste bat.] 2
Neskatxa gazte, paregabia,
apirilleko arrosa
Izarra bezin dizdizaria,
txoria beziñ airosa.
[Oraintxe baiño gusto gehiago
nik ezin nezake goza;
Zori onian ikusten zaitut,
nere biotzak hau poza! ] 2
Ez al didazu antzik ematen,
nik zaitudala nahiago,
Ai! mariñelak gau illunian
izarra baino gehiago?
[Nere onduan zauzkatalako
posez zoraturik nago;
Zu ikusteak alegratu nau,
triste nenguan lehenago.] 2
Nere betiko pentsamentua,
nere konsolagarria,
Zu gabetanik ezin bizi naiz,
esaten dizut egia.
[Zu ba’ziñake arbola eta

Nik zu ziñaden arbola artantxe,
egingo nuke kabia.] 2

Lua Lua
Loa, Loa
There are numerous lullabies in the Basque song tradition. What distinguishes some of these songs, however, is a morbid sense of storytelling. Here is a calm, placid tune the lyrics conclude with father selling mother off at the fair for money.

[Lua-lua txun txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
Aita guria Gastiez'en da, ama manduan hartuta.]
Lua-lua txun-txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
[Lua-lua txun-txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
Aita gurea abiatu da, Bitoriako ferira.]
Lua-lua txun-txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
[Lua-lua txun-txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
Aita guriak diru asko du, ama bidian salduta.]
Lua-lua txun-txurrun berde, lua-lua masusta.
