Nere Etxea edo Laboraria

 

You can see in the morning at dawn, on the top of a small mountain, a small house with a white wall in front.  It sits between four oak trees.  There is a white dog near the door.  There is a fountain nearby.  This is where I live in peace.

            Even though it’s not a castle, I like my birthplace that was selected by my ancestors.  When I go somewhere else I feel as though I’m lost.  I was born there and unless I lose my mind I will die there.

            My eleven year old daughter, Kattalin, is close to her mother.  She has blue eyes like her mother.  I believe in time she will make a fine woman.

Boneta eta Txapela

 

A Basque boy, after spending a year in Paris, came home and was trying to impress his friend Phetiri (Pedro or Pierre).  The boy: “I’m here from Paris on a visit.  We make a good living there, as you can see I even replaced the beret with a hat.”  Phetiri: “Now that you have the hat where did you leave the Basque beret?  That hat doesn’t look very good on your head.”  The boy: “I don’t care what people are saying, I know many women in Paris.  By looking rich I hope I can marry a rich lady so that I can live without working.  I don’t have to do heavy work like you, I have my own business in Paris on a street corner shinning shoes.”                Phetiri: “To me, your business sounds pretty lousy.  You ought to get out of Paris, and the sooner the better.  As for myself, I prefer to stay with my beret on my head in the Basque country where I was born, singing songs near the kitchen fire.”

 

 

Iragan egun batez egin dugu irri;

Lau andren festa

 

On he second day of herriko besta, in a hidden corner, four women had gathered.  Three of them unmarried and one widowed they met under the shade of a tree.  On their knees they had a piece of slate and were playing cards.  I was wondering what the gadget was near the jug.  I believe that it’s a shahakua (wine sack), standing tall, full of wine.  And now what do I see?  What is that they are trying to hide under their skirts?  Why it's a bottle of cognac.  They are well dressed because it is the second day of herriko besta.  They are playing cards amongst themselves with the shahakua and the bottle of cognac.  They are laughing and having a good time while they’re getting drunk.

A popular song that moves through several tune changes.  The first part is about the departing fishermen.  The port is still and quiet with a white boat floating.  Then at two o'clock in the morning, we fishermen awake to again go afar.  As I depart below your window, I see you crying.  By why cry my dear?  Above is the star to lead me.  The second part then moves to lively biribilketa or pasecalle punctuated by the festive running of bulls up and down the town streets.
